Our Story
Captain Errol Boyd and his wife Joan started in the Antiques business in St.Catharines in 1978 ,while he was still working on the great lakes. He statrted out as a deck hand and worked his way up through the ranks and had earned a 2nd mate's ticket.
After a few years he decided to go for his Captain's Ticket.
He took a position for the Harbour commission as Captain on the Toronto Island ferry crossing at the island airport.
At that time the shop was known as "The Benchmark", a nautical term, and started out as a small craft shop for Joan to run while Errol was away, but it quickly turned into an antique shop within the first year.
His oldest Daughter Lisa(15) helped her mom run the shop while her dad was away.
Once she could drive she was taking in the auctions across the boarder and doing all the paper work to cross through customs, working in the store and going on deliveries.
Lisa studied Interior Design at Niagara college for 3 years and with her dad's keen business sense and her new education they were able to pick out great deals and bring them to the public.
During this time Captain Errol took a position in the Arctic on the "M.V.Norwita" building Tarsuit island for Dome Petrolium.
He had the first "Garage Sale" in the Arctic selling old scrap cables and parts for Dome from their ship yard.
Hmm ...1 mile of 3" cable only $5,000 what a deal!
As the years went on both, Shana and Leigh, Errol and Joan's 2 other children, did their share of "time" in the shop leaning how to sell, build and restore old furniture.(shown in the middle)

He then moved the business to Toronto when he took a position as Captain on the Toronto Island Ferry , crossing to the island airport.
He sold "The Benchmark" in 1989 to his daughter Lisa, planning to retire from it. Lisa operated her shop for 2 years on Eglinton West then moved to Queen West at Roncesvalles where it stayed for 9 years. changing the name a bit to "Benchmark Furniture and Antiques
A year later the bug bit him again and he opened
"Superior Antiques" on Queen Street West.
His shop moved several times due to rent increases over the years. He had been on Weston Rd., Oak Ridges, north of the city where he also had a refinishing shop and make new solid 3" thick pine tables and other custom furniture.
He moved back on to Queen West at Dunn Ave. and renames it Captain's Treasures, then to Hamilton's Ottawa Street,.
Just before the present location, he was operating at the Fleastival market at the 427 and Dundas where he and Lisa joined forces again and had 22 8'x10'. This market closed in July and pushed them into getting another store front location.
Lisa is a graduate of the Haverhill Institute and now offers home staging and she received her Real estate license and is currently working with Coldwell Banker Terrequity Realty Inc.
Captain Boyd a.k.a "Poppy" even brings back little scally wags on his long voyages.
